Seven Things: December

A glimpse of life captured via Instagram


1 > Post: The postal strike is over (for now at least), which means we might stand a chance of actually getting some pretty things in the mail this Christmas! I sent off a big batch of cards this week and hope they make it safely to faraway friends.

2 > Paper Trends: Oooh... have you seen these goodies at CNA? The Paper Trends range is a fresh new collection of whimsical stationery. It's a pity the Creative Stationery brand's website doesn't showcase their work more. Anyway, the prices are really affordable (except this owl USB that I desperately want), Awesome things to send to pen pals the world over.

3 > Fashion Camp: On Tuesday I spoke at Fashion Nanny's Fashion Camp for teens. I touched on social media, blogging, YouTube and also online safety. Followed by... a DIY with the young ladies. They had such fun making tape measure brooches and personalising them with washi tape and buttons. 

4 > En-sem-ble: I visited my client Tina's pop-up shop this week at Windermere Centre. She has collaborated with several lovely local creatives to set up the shop for the festive season. It is next to the new Woolies Food in the centre. It makes me so proud to see how hard my clients work and how well they do. This puppet friend is one of her personal creations which she creates for schools to accompany books and stories. Over and above that she hosts event, sets-up play areas at markets, runs them and also manages to work on pop-up events like the House and Garden Show! Impressed!

5 > CHRISTMAS: Woohoo... this year I am really indulging in enjoying each and every day of December. Actions of love, writing cards, decorating or doing some shopping. Filling each day with a little more joy before the 25th. Snow Fairy from Lush is delightfully sweet and adds a touch of cheer to every shower. Have you tried it? It's limited edition around this time of year.

6 > Shopping: With all this Christmas cheer comes a lot of selecting and also not shopping for myself more than others - ha ha! Easier said than done - I spotted this Typo Thoughts and Reflections journal and was torn, but decided to stay focused on my gift giving instead. Nice to look at nonetheless!

7 > Season's Greetings: Part of said gift giving is spoiling my clients! One of my favourite things to do. Claire and I worked on this postcard to send out to a special few.

Seven Things via Instagram

Wow! I haven't done a Seven Things post in like seven months! Ridiculous... it suddenly dawned on me the other day... so here I am sharing seven things of late. I did share a few of these snippets on Instagram and I also saved some for this post. I now have two accounts - one for business, stationery and creative updates. The second account is for more personal out and about photos. Follow along here... nadiavdmescht and hellonadiavdm.

1 > Movember: I've been waiting all year to bust these out. Finally, I can wear them and be part of the coolest man month. I got these little earrings as a gift and love wearing them for a touch of quirk.

2 > Stationery Packs: My creative escape time is spent getting crafty. I made this one for a pen pal. Now, if only the strike backlog would ease up so I can actually post it. I would be heartbroken if it got lost on its merry travels.

3 > Christmas Time: There is no more denying it... the festive season is upon us. I recently wrote my first card and used a very pretty tag from La Cartoleria.

4 > Night Out: About two weeks ago it was a close friend's thirtieth birthday celebrations. We had a fun day and night, which ended with dancing and sore feet. As I was unpacking my bag the next day these remnants stood out. My darling friend also gave me the sweetest gift topped with a Nifty250 strip - how kind considering it was her birthday.

5 > Smashing Colours: On Tuesday night I headed out with Sabrina from Fashion Nanny for a Smashbox event. We were spoilt and tried loads of beautiful products. We also caught up with a few other Durban creatives.

6 > Housewarming: Taryn from Smith's Bakeshop always outdoes herself. This delicious and beautiful creation was part of some recent housewarming celebrations for two lovely friends.

7 > Boiler Room Cafe: Finally, I am cool too. It was exciting to visit this awesome Durban space with a few of my fav creative friends. Worth a visit for sure - especially to see the art by Resoborg.

Seven Things: Networking & Fun

As mentioned in this week's MFM post, I attended a lovely networking event last Saturday. I personally enjoy getting out there and meeting new people to work or connect with. Caitlyn de Beer arranged the get together. There were several creative ladies I did know, but several I hadn't met yet, so the mix was varied which always makes things more interesting. Caitlyn was a graceful hostess and treated us to an inspired morning which gave me much needed fuel  for my working weekend. People often ask me if I'm a life coach to which I reply no, as I'm more of a business coach / consultant specialising in creative fields, whereas Caitlyn focuses on the actual life side. We both agree there are overlaps in our work, but we also agree that there is plenty to go around and that there is a greater reward in synergy rather than, imagined competition. Let's chat further about Seven Things I enjoyed on the day...

1 > Feeling Inspired: I'm usually the one running workshops so I don't often get to sit back and enjoy information sharing by someone else. Caitlyn prepped work booklets for us and went through them to get us in tune with ourselves and our businesses. I loved the pastel hues and useful info within.

2 > Pink: You know by now I love pink and it seems so does Caitlyn. I gifted her one of my branded notebooks to say thanks for the day and look how nicely the packaging matched her stationery and phone. 

3 > A Graceful Hostess: We all like to feel welcome - especially when we don't know everyone. It was great to have hostess who took the time to allow everyone to feel included regardless of the level or size of their business.

4 > Breakfast: The yummy snacks both healthy and not so healthy were delicious. I enjoyed a piece of red velvet cake because I had already had breakie. Even if I hadn't I would still have had cake... ha ha (breakfast of champs).

5 > Beautiful Flowers: Cheerful blooms add to any event and these brightened the day even further.

6 > Networking: The reason for the little event - I enjoyed browsing through everyone's cards and learning more about what they do.

7 > A Chance to Share: I took the opportunity to package up some business cards to handout. I love packaging goodies up (obviously) and it adds a little something extra.

A Glimpse of Life: Captured via Instagram


It's been a while since I shared a Seven Things post. In fact the last one was the Decorex Seven Things, which was far too long ago! In today's glimpse I share seven things I have been up to, seen or enjoyed - all captured via Instagram.

1 > Profits: I haven't chatted much about the Thrift Sale that I organised in April, but it went really well, which of course makes me very happy. I really enjoyed earning money for things that I no longer wanted or needed. The first picture shows a lovely book and new earrings which I bought with some of my sale profits.

2 > Wrapped and Ready: I recently bought a copy of Decorate Workshop (found at Adams in Musgrave) for a friend's birthday and wrapped it using a few favourites. I included the 29 as she made a point of celebrating the fact that she was a year away from thirty. On another note I can really recommend the book - the layout and concept is beautiful.

3 > Sitting Pretty: I received this mirrored tray for my 21st birthday and it has travelled around with me from home to home. I really love its simplicity and using it to show-off a few of my favourite beauty items. It makes me feel like a true lady.

4 > Creating: I have been on the hunt for a few statement necklaces, but each one I spotted didn't look unique enough, so I just made my own. I don't have a lot of time to get crafty, but every now and again I love making something personal.

5 > Bloggers & Treats: I attended the exceptionally well organised Durban Blogger Meet (#DBNbloggermeet) and was showered with amazing goodies from a whole host of wonderful sponsors. The list was incredible and included delicious pizza from Hashtag (the venue), beauty delights, macarons from Madam Macaron and even cups from Le Creuset. It was an exceptionally busy week that followed so I didn't get to credit everyone, but Fathima did a really lovely post - take a look.

6 > Mr Price: I recently went to a fun event hosted by Mr P for their Winter launch. We shopped, we laughed and we had plenty of champers. One of the best things was the smores bar - heaven! I stole this snap from Monique.

7 > Creative Jars: I created a few of these jars which were for sale at the Thrift Sale. They were full to the brim with crafty things like buttons, charms and ribbon.

Seven Things: Decorex 2014

As mentioned in my Meet Free Monday post - I went to a trend talk by Dion Chang yesterday at Decorex. The talk was awesome, inspired and exceptionally well organised. I was also invited by Nespresso to visit Decorex on the expo side and enjoyed a leisurely stroll taking in all that was on offer. Last year, I was fortunate enough to speak at Decorex and so it was a more pressurized event for me, whereas this year I can fully enjoy just browsing. This year's offering seems to be exceptionally good - especially on the display and imaginative stands side. I loved creative aspects that I spotted around, but I thought I would narrow it down to seven key things which I captured via Instagram.

1 > Stretta Cafe: I've had my eye on this cool locally based business for a while and I really like the cafe space which they set-up at the show. It's true to their style and branding, plus it looks just plain awesome. I'm heading back to Decorex tomorrow and hope to sample their pizza. 

2 > Bold Prints via St Leger & Viney and Suda West Designer Spotlight: Their bold prints, interesting colours and the visually pleasing space was just perfect.They also had the most wonderful vintage bicycle parked in the centre of their stand, with a basket full of proteas both real and ceramic. Imaginative and in general a brilliantly appealing mash up of colours.

3 > Urban Lace: The work of Sarah and Chantelle was the first thing I saw as I walked in - their two spaces flank the entrance. Their locally sourced design elements and on-trend co-ordination was ever so lovely. In fact - I wish I could recreate it at home. 

4 > Nespresso: Daniel has his eye on one of these sexy machines. Something that could be quite bland is transformed into a kitchen focal point through creative design. Thanks Nespresso for the invite to Decorex! It's also their first time at a show like this and what a perfect place for them to be. Do you reckon George Clooney will make an appearance (*holding thumbs)?

5 > Bella & Boo's Tuk Tuk: I'm in loooove! How cute is this mobile machine! The set-up, colours and layout is beyond lovely and makes you want some Bella and Boo frozen yoghurt pronto. In fact the entire food section is great - clearly and cleverly thought out.

6 > Plascon: Colour and creativity in one beautifully decorated space! This bicycle caught my eye as it welcomes you to their large stand. Who knew paint could be so visually interesting.

7 > Caesarstone's Collaboration: The clever bunch over at Caesarstone collaborated with Kitchen Aid and Le Creusat to show-off their products in a whole new light. It makes for an impressive and interesting statement.

So... if you are in Durban this weekend and like pretty things, fantastic design and locally crafted and inspired products be sure to visit Decorex. Happy long weekend!

P.S: The demos this year also look really interesting with a focus on food. Joani (Masterchef contestant) is sharing quinoa recipes, plus the space has been recreated to look like a lovely, homely kitchen. There are several other interesting food orientated demos - so be sure to take a look at the line-up when you arrive at the show.

Seven Things: A Catch-Up


I am quite behind with sharing my monthly Seven Things with you. If you are new to these posts - I basically share seven things that I captured via Instagram, some items I did share on my feed and others I didn't. The post is aimed at sharing a few of the details with you as they offer a personal glimpse into my life. Today's edition stretches from December through to yesterday.

1 > Wedding Belles: As I mentioned in my kitchen tea post I was in Cape Town for my best friend's wedding. She looked so beautiful! Our bridesmaid dresses were created by Miss Friday and it's a dress I looked forward to actually wearing it again. The sunglasses I am wearing are from Topshop and I adore them - I curse the day something happens to them (touch wood).

2 > Reading: In December I read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (what a name) and I truly loved it. It was so wonderful that I wish I could read it for the first time all over again.

3 > The Big Organise: I have slowly, but surely been ensuring every area of our home is in tip top shape - one such mini space is my bedside drawer. You will spot the Dirty Works hand cream which was a very cheap (R15.99) and cheerful treat from Clicks. For the price it's a great product and it smells delicious. I used a re-purposed box as an organiser and it works brilliantly.

4 > Office Time: This space within my office is one of my favourites. The mail holder is from Typo and the diffuser is a Yankee Candle wax melt. It's long lasting and leaves a faint, but lovely smell in the room.

5 > Baking: On Sunday I did some baking. I LOVE cookies, like loooove and would eat a pack a day if I could. The batch turned out well and I thought it would be fun to share a few so I packaged them up. I also thought it best to pass them on or else I would probably be suffering from a sugar induced coma at this point.

6 > A Package for Roxy: My holiday meant plenty of time to create some snail mail for faraway friends. One such friend is Roxy from City Girl Searching. I sent her a few papery goodies as a surprise

7 > Four & Twenty: This sweet deli is a Cape Town must-visit. They have several very delicious meals on the menu and the decor is rather pretty too.
